Nestled in the Edmonton area is a neighborhood that is quiet and relatively undisturbed called Tipaskan. This area is located in Southeast Edmonton; it is a part of the Mill Woods community of Lakewood. The name means "a reserve" in the Cree language, and recalls that the Mill Woods area was a Cree Indian reserve between 1876 and 1891.
Most of the construction on the neighborhood occurred during the 1970s when approximately seven out of ten of residences were constructed. Most of the remaining residences were constructed during the 1980s, when build cost were at an all time low and new homes were a much sought after commodity.
According to a previous census the neighborhood has a mixture of housing, with the majority of these being single family dwellings which make up 42% of the residences in the area. Row houses and duplexes make up the remainder of these residences. In an interesting fact, 9% of the residences are listed as other. Only a little over half of the residences in Tipaskan are listed as owner occupied while the rest are listed as rented.
