As a part of Big Lake, an area roughly 17 kilometres northwest of downtown Edmonton, Starling was originally known as Neighbourhood 2 of the Big Lake Area Structure Plan, but has been known as Starling since October 2010. Residents can reach Northwest Edmonton quickly using LeClair Way, and Anthony Henday Drive provides access to northeast Edmonton and west Edmonton. The City of St. Albert is located north of Starling, just across 137th Avenue. Commuters in Starling can take bus route A1 from Heritage Boulevard and Harwood Drive, which connects with bus route 201 to take commuters to downtown Edmonton. This route runs every hour and the trip takes roughly 1 hour and 20 minutes.

There are several schools of different levels serving the area of Starling, located just north of LeClair Way and east of Big Lake. These schools include Wild Rose Elementary School, Robert Rundle Elementary, Albert LaCombe Catholic Elementary School, and Sir George Simpson Junior High School.

As a relatively new community, the population of Starling is still being assessed as it grows. Starling at Big Lake is a recently completed development that is home to young professionals and families.
