Elmwood is a residential neighbourhood in the west of Edmonton. This was originally a part of Jasper Place. Elmwood is very conveniently located between two huge centres for shopping. There is the West Edmonton Mall and the Meadowlark Park Centre. It is not for nothing that Edmonton is known as the shopping capital of Canada.
Elmwood is bound by 87 Avenue on the north, 159 Street in the east, Whitemud Drive in the south and 170 Street in the west. Elmwood is in an ideal location for easy access to Whyte Avenue, the University of Alberta and Fort Edmonton Park.
Also the proposed new light rail expansion will mean that public transport could expand dramatically and provide an even easier means of transport to the local commuter routes. Many people of Elmwood tend to work in the Edmonton Mall. This provides jobs not only in the retail industry, but also provides a source of income for those in the catering trades and the entertainment industry.
The unique location of Elmwood as a central pivotal point between the major centres of retail therapy on one side and academia on the other ensure that it has a mixed population of academics and service industry workers. It is therefore a very desirable location for many families of commuters to live.
Other communities in the area include; Glenwood, Lynnwood, Oleskiw and Rio Terrace
