Edgemont Schools: An Array of Options to Choose From

There are lots of schools close to the Edgemont area, each one offering something slightly different. Bessie Nichols School is the closest elementary school, offering students from Grade 1 through to Junior High a variety of programming options. Older students can benefit from full-year art, band, and drama courses, as well as career studies and sports like curling and soccer. Younger students can participate in a running club and an out-of-school care program operated by the YMCA. Sister Annata Brockman Catholic School offers a faith-based education for students from Kindergarten through to grade 9, along with extra-curricular activities like the robotics club, band, volleyball, soccer, and cross country running. Meanwhile, the Parkland Immanuel Christian School offers a variety of extra-curriculars including track & field and badminton, plus thousands of dollars worth of scholarships for students in Grade 12. Edgemont is a great place for culinary aficionados, with a variety of nearby restaurants offering different kinds of food at multiple price points. There are several chain restaurants nearby like Dairy Queen, Boston Pizza, and Original Joe’s, as well as artisan restaurants like Franco’s Italian Restaurant and Vivo, the Italian fine dining hotspot and home of Red Seal certified chef Michael Hassall. Neighbourhood Amenities: Lots of Parkland to Explore

The Edgemont area has lots to offer the many families who live and play here. The area backs onto the woodlands surrounding Yekau Lake, a First Nations plot of land that also serves as a popular area for outdoor enthusiasts. Yekau Lake is open to the public, and licensed fishermen are free to fish on the lake. Directly adjacent Yekau Lake sits the Indian Lakes Golf Club, a public golf course that is popular among locals. The community is situated close to Hampton Market, which is home to a shopping centre, a medical clinic, and a variety of restaurants. There are also two larger shopping centres just a short drive away. Edgemont is also within easy reach of Terwillegar Park, a 186-hectare park in the southwest end of Edmonton that features a canoe launch, hiking and mountain biking trails, a large off-leash dog area, and a future footbridge connecting the park to River Valley Oleskiw. The footbridge will span 262 meters and is slated to open in 2016. As part of this project, the City of Edmonton is also creating 5 kilometers of trails to connect Terwillegar Park to the Anthony Henday Bridge and the Fort Edmonton Bridge.

Getting Around: Transit Connections Keep Downtown Within Reach

Edgemont is connected to downtown Edmonton via the 100, 101 and 103 buses, which stop along 199 Street. As the area is a fairly new development, transit hasn’t yet extended directly into the community. The closest transit stop is at the corner of 199 Street and 44 Avenue, where the 117 bus stops. These transit connections run to destinations like the West Edmonton Mall, Misericordia Community Hospital, Glastonbury Park, and Edmonton City Centre. From there, it’s possible to transfer to the LRT Capital Line and take the light rail to the Heritage Valley Town Centre and beyond.

The Demographic Makeup of Edgemont

Edgemont has a population of just under 15,000 people, according to City of Edmonton statistics gathered in 2011. 86% of homes in the area are single or semi-detached dwellings. The entire community is located within half a kilometer of parkland. Real estate prices tend to vary, with some homes selling for just over $500,000 while others may sell as high as $1.5 million.
