Canora is a mainly residential part of northwest Edmonton. Canora was originally a district of Jasper Place. This originally started off as a nearby town. In fact, Jasper Place was known to be one of the largest towns in Canada in its hey day. Then, in 1964, Jasper Place merged with Edmonton and just became a part of this city. Now Canora is located in Edmonton.
There are two schools in Canora. Brightview Elementary school which is governed by the Edmonton Public School System and Holy Cross Elementary Junior High School which is run by the Edmonton Catholic School System. One thing about Canora that many residents do say is the a quarter of the population can live and work and travel between the two without even owning a car.
The Canora travel system is highly developed and provides cheap and easy access for many of the residents to be able to live their lives in a greener and more environmental aware way. The ETS bus service has helped the community to grow and thrive. The city of Edmonton has many more plans to expand the public transport infrastructure of the whole area by introducing a light rail access via 87th avenue. This can mean that even low density populations spread around the edges of the city can benefit from the new plans. Many people prefer to live out in the suburbs and away from the major malls and shopping centres of Edmonton while still having easy access to work and shopping facilities.
The importance for whole families to be able to travel into town for recreation and the weekly shop can not be emphasised enough. These new plans to improve the public transport will ensure a much needed influx of new families into Canora.
