What to Do in Edmonton this Weekend Dec 2nd - 4th, 2016

December is here and if you are looking to enjoy some holiday activities or practically anything else, you have come to the right place. The following is a collection of the happenings this weekend in The Big E.

Light-Up & Celebrate the Season at the Alberta Legislature

The Alberta Legislature’s annual Light-Up and Celebrate the Season is coming home for the holidays with musical performances throughout the month of December. Close to 70 musical ensembles from across Alberta will be featured on the rotunda’s grand staircase with daily performances. The Legislature grounds will be featuring thousands of lights – perfect for a festive meander with a loved one – and at the centre of it all, a 60-foot spruce dressed with over 5,000 sparkling lights.

Who – This event is for all ages and admission is free! Everyone can enjoy the Legislature’s splendid offering.

When – Light-Up is December 1, 2016 starting at 4:00 p.m. going until 5:30 p.m. Celebrate the Season is running from December 2 to 23, 2016.

Where – Legislative Assembly of Alberta: 10800 97 Ave. NW.

Country Christmas Lights

Looking to take a break from the city? Head down to Leduc for Country Christmas Lights and explore a winter wonderland of sparkling joy. The lights will be powered up every day of the week. The jolly bringer of holiday cheer himself will be in attendance December 2-4, 16-18, and 21-23.

Who – All ages. This event is free and the Leduc & District Food Bank will be accepting cash and food donations.

When – December 1, 2016 until January 1, 2016 | 5:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. 7 days a week.

Where ­– TWP Road 492, Leduc

Disney On Ice: Worlds of Enchantment

Disney On Ice is coming back to Rexall Place with a performance filled with adventure, stunts and Disney favourites from Cars, The Little Mermaid and Toy Story. This event will be perfect for a family outing.

Who – It’s Disney, need I say more? Admissions range from $18.75 to $80 plus charges.

When – December 1-4, 2016.

Where – Rexall Place: 7424 118 Ave.

St. Albert Children’s Theatre

St. Albert Children’s Theatre is set to grace the stage with its winter production double feature: A Seussified Christmas Carol and the Nutcracker Sings.

Who – Everyone, of course. Admissions for Adults is $28 and for Students and Seniors its $22.

When – November 24 to December 4, 2016.

Where – Arden Theatre: 5 St. Anne Street, St. Albert.


Take a stroll through the Kurimoto Japanese Garden breathtakingly lit with thousands of candles for Luminaria. Enjoy hot apple cider by the bonfire while you take in the sweet melodies of wondering acapella groups and marvel at ice sculptures.

Who – All Ages. Ticket pricing is as follows: Adult $13.50, Senior (65+) $9.75, Child (7-12) $6.25, Child (6 & Under) Free.

When – December 2-4 from 5:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m.

Where – Devonian Botanic Garden: 51227 Hwy 60, Spruce Grove.

Other Family Christmas Events and Activities

Christmas at the Park – Fort Edmonton will be packed with festive treats and Christmas themed activities and historical information. Discover Christmas past with the whole family at Fort Edmonton Park on December 3 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Admission is $13.75.

Santa’s Breakfast – Have a hot breakfast with Santa and find out which list you grace on December 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 at Millennium Place in Sherwood Park. Admission is $12.

Karol Wojtyla 2016 Nativity Play – One Candle Productions puts on its 9th annual full-scale performance of the Bethlehem story. The show starts December 3 at 2:00 p.m. at the Royal Alberta Museum Theatre, 12845 – 102 Ave. Tickets are $15

Whyte Wishes – There is plenty to see and do in Old Strathcona this weekend with horse-drawn sleigh rides and Santa! When: December 3 to 17.

Christmas in the Country – Festive activities and shopping await at multiple venues in South Strathcona County from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on December 3. A grand finale and fireworks are slated to be held at the Strathcona County South Contact Office in South Cooking Lake from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
