Athlone is located in the north west part of Edmonton Most of the growth and subsequent building in Athlone occurred in the 1970's During this period, just over half of all residences were constructed. Athlone saw very little residential development between the years of 1970 and 1990. The 1990s saw a period of renewed growth in the neighborhood as one in three of residences were built between 1991 and 2001.

The most common type of residence in the neighborhood, is the single family dwelling. These account for four out of every five of all the residences in the neighborhood. Row houses account for another one in seven of all residences. Most of the remaining residences are duplexes. just under three out of every four of all residences are owner occupied with just over one out of every four being rented.

The neighborhood consist of three schools. Athlone Elementary School and Wellington Junior High School are operated by the Edmonton Public School System, while Sir John Thompson Catholic Junior High School is operated by the Edmonton Catholic School System.
