Allendale is surrounded by a mix of light industrial sub divisions and residential neighborhoods. CRP West, CPR Irvine, Coronet Industrial and Rosedale Industrial are located to the east. Allendale’s residential neighbors include; Parkallen to the west, Pleasantview and Lendrum Place to the south, McKernan and Queen Alexandra to the north. Residential development in Allendale commenced prior to the end of World War II.
Only a few residences were constructed at this time. Approximately half the residences in the neighborhood were constructed between the end of World War II and 1960. Another third were constructed during the 1960s and 1970s. A small number of residences were constructed after 1980. Almost three-quarters of residences are single family dwellings, thus making them the most common type of home in Allendale. Rented apartments in low rise buildings with fewer than five stories and duplexes are a minority in this neighborhood.
Just over half the residences are rented, with the remainder being owner occupied. The Edmonton Public School System operates the only school in the neighborhood, the Allendale Elementary Junior High School. The adjacent community of McKernan has a small shopping strip which provides a lush escape from the hustle and bustle with its green space. McQueen offers several educational options such as elementary, high and pre schools. The neighborhood has easy access to recreational activities such as the Mill Creek Ravine as well as other leisure and athletic centers. For a family stroll or picnic, Violet Archer Park in Parkallen is a wonderful choice.
Other communities in the area include; Belgravia, Empire Park, Lansdowne, Lendrum Place Malmo Plains, Queen Alexandra, and Strathcona,
