La Perle Real Estate - Property Listings For Sale

La Perle is a mainly residential neighbourhood in west Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The neighbourhood is named for a resident (EJ LaPerle) who operated a general store in the area in the early 20th century. His dedication to his store and friendliness to his customers were well known in the area. After many years of residents referring to the area unofficially as La Perle’s, it finally was given the name officially and is a fitting tribute to him that the area has acquired his name.

Most residential developments in the neighbourhood occurred during the 1970s and 1980s. A quarter of the houses were built between 1971 and 1980. Another six in ten residences were built between 1981 and 1990. Residential development of the neighbourhood was substantially complete by 1995. The most common type of residence in the neighbourhood, according to the 2005 municipal census, is the single family dwelling. These account for approximately half of all the residences in the neighbourhood. Another one in five are rented apartments and apartment style condominiums in low rise buildings with fewer than five storeys. Buildings which are taller than 5 storeys do not suit the area because they obscure the lovely views of the surrounding countryside. They do not tend to get planning permission. One in six of all residences are row houses, while one in eight are duplexes.

Approximately seven out of ten of residences are owner occupied while three in ten are rented. There is one school in the neighbourhood, La Perle Elementary School, operated by the Edmonton Public School System. West Edmonton Mall is located to the south east of La Perle in the neighbourhood of Summerlea. The neighbourhood is bounded on the west by Anthony Henday Drive, on the north by 100 Avenue, on the east by 178 Street, and on the south by 95 Avenue. The Anthony Henday provides access to destinations to the south of the city including the Edmonton International Airport. Access to the downtown core and Grant MacEwan University is provided by 100 Avenue which passes through the neighbourhood.

Grant MacEwan University was founded in 1971 as "Grant MacEwan Community College" and offered primarily one and two year programs, such as diplomas and certificates. In 1988 it received approval to offer university transfer credit, and in 1999 dropped the word "community" from its name. Since 2004 it has offered full bachelor's degrees, which is usually only done by universities in Canada. By 2006, the institution was referred to in all publicity materials simply as "MacEwan", reflecting the addition of more university-like degree programs. On September 24, 2009, the institution was officially renamed a university.

Neighboring communities include; Gariepy, Lymburn, Summerlea and Jamieson Place
