Since the late nineteen-fifties, the neighbourhoods east and northeast of Edmonton have always been notorious for being crime-ridden and tough places. McCauley was comprised mostly of refugees from Europe during the second world war. Sometimes these displaced persons were referred to as DPs.
Most citizens did not welcome these refugees into other parts of the city. Now days, still the neighbourhoods are known for their miserable poverty and mind-numbing social problems. Some describe it as a home for the homeless.
Of course, the area has the highest crime rates in the city of Edmonton. Not only does the area have crime, it has many great real estate deals waiting for buyers. The demand for quaint, older homes is on the rise and the neighbourhoods recently asked the city to put less emphasis on the subsidized housing projects that they are so focused on building.
Although other neighbourhoods are scared to take on the subsidized housing, the area's representatives say that too much social housing problems will never resolve the problem, they must have help from other communities to pick up some the slack.
