Edmonton’s South LRT Expansion Open to Commuters
Posted by Yoofi Gerard Hagan on Thursday, April 29th, 2010 at 1:12pm.Edmonton commuters can now travel from the south side to downtown in approximately 20 minutes.
Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach opened the new Century Park and Southgate LRT stations on Saturday, April 24, 2010, saying the stations will improve Edmontonians and visitors’ quality of life. The lines grant easier access to hospitals, downtown office buildings and the University of Alberta and run through to Clareview. On average, the LRT transports more than 74,000 passengers daily.
The project added 5.47 kilometres to the LRT line and cost $690 million but Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel said the two stations are just the beginning. Edmonton plans to expand the LRT line from the southeast to the north and the west, and officials said these continuing LRT expansions will cost about $1 billion, money that will need to come from the provincial and federal governments.
The LRT project funding cost $8.3 million in municipal taxes, $12.7 million in provincial funding that came from fuel rebates, $15 million in municipal, provincial and federal funds from the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, $25 million from the Alberta Infrastructure program, $56 million in federal grants from the gas tax revenue and $573 million in tax-supported debt that will be paid from the New Deal for Cities and Communities.
