The history of West Meadowlark Park takes one back to the time before World War II. Although there are new additions that took place after the War, you can still witness a breathtaking scene with how well the patrons of this area work to preserve its history. Before 1964, West Meadowlark Park was part the Town of Jasper Place, at that time Jasper Place and Edmonton merged to form a larger local government. Some of the homes still in use today date back to pre World War II. However, the majority of the homes were developed in the midst of the 1960’s. Some were did not join the area until the 1980’s.
Today the neighborhood is dancing with more single family homes than multifamily homes, like apartments and duplexes. There are also a few row houses in the area as well. In West Meadowlark Park, people come to stay. They mostly purchase their home, a few residents rent their homes but, they are there to stay. The Community League works hard to keep the grounds well maintained. They organize and present the area with events like garage sales and child sports and advancement, such as playgrounds, redesigns of common use areas and so on. This ensures a long lasting life of enjoyment and ease.
For children in the community there are two different high schools to attend, Jasper Place High School, a public school and St. Francis Xavier High School, a Catholic school. The Catholic School System has a couple schools open and operating in West Meadowlark Park. They also operate the Annunciation catholic Elementary School. Some other schools in the neighborhood are The Afton School of the Arts and the Aurora School.
For something extra to do in the area, the Jasper Place Fitness and Leisure Centre is located next to the Johnny Bright Sports Park. With bike trails and open fields exercise and relaxation can easily become a part of everyday life for residents. Residents can also check out the Bill Hunter Centre located near the park in the East side of the neighborhood. West Meadowlark Park residents are also fortunate to have Misericordia Community Hospital in the Southwest corner of the neighborhood.
