The neighborhood is located on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River Valley, overlooking the nearby neighborhood of Cloverdale to the North. To the East is the neighborhood of Holyrood and to the Southwest is the neighborhood of Bonnie Doon. To the Southeast is the neighborhood of Idylwylde. Bonnie Doon Shopping Centre and Whyte Avenue in Strathcona are located a short distance to the south of the neighborhood.
A portion of Strathearn was annexed by the City of Strathcona in 1907, and became part of the City of Edmonton when Strathcona amalgamated with Edmonton in 1912. Land was divided and ready for construction but only a few houses went up at a time for a long period of time. After World War II Edmonton's city planners re-plotted the area and rapid development began. The majority of the structures in the neighborhood date back to 1948 to 1954.
In this residential community there are a large number of single family homes. However, there is a balance between single family homes, low rise apartment buildings and high rise apartment buildings. There are a more rental dwellings than owner occupied homes. With having a lot of rental dwellings in a neighborhood, this means that the patrons of the area or not ready to sink their feet in long term. They have either just moved in or are planning their move out.
There are local stores and commercial buildings here and there throughout Strathearn. They have a strip mall called the Strathearn Centre. Several parks can be found within this community, including the local school grounds, Silver Heights Park and Strathearn Park. Local churches are also located in Strathearn including, Strathearn United Church, Assumption Catholic Church and the Bonnie Doon Stake Centre of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Other amenities include beautiful tree-lined streets and the wonderful scenic view of downtown Edmonton from Strathearn Drive.
Strathearn has inspiration to become a warm and welcoming community. The Strathearn Community League is a neighborhood organization that was established in the early 1950s. The league's original concept was to provide local recreational opportunities. In cooperation with the City of Edmonton it built a playground, skating rink and associated league hall in Silver Heights Park in the heart of the neighborhood, and organized child sports teams. In more recent years the league has taken on more involvement in social matters like providing funds for a local preschool for about fifteen years. The Community League has also become active in urban planning matters within and near its boundaries.
The schools in the local area have faced some struggling moments. Strathearn Elementary/Junior School was a fixture in the neighborhood from the early 1950s until 2005. At this time Edmonton Public School Board was forced to close the school due to declining enrollment. In September 2006, the old school building once again held a school called Ecole Publique Gabrielle-Roy, a francophone school run by the Conseil scolaire Centre-Nord.
Due to the location of Strathearn, public transportation seems to be the most functional means of travel for the residents. Most amenities are within walking distance of the neighborhood. It is common to see bicycles as the area offers wonderful trails to ride on to get from one location to the next. There is also the option to use the public bus system if needed.
