Strathcona Real Estate, Edmonton AB
Located in the South-Central area of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada is a lively neighborhood called Strathcona. The University of Alberta is conveniently located directly to the West of Strathcona. The ever popular Whyte Avenue is the center point for this area bringing life, culture and excitement to the community.
Strathcona was once a separate city, achieving town status in 1899 and city status in1907. The City of Strathcona united with Edmonton in 1912. The popularity of Whyte Avenue is due to the character and style of the buildings. The oldest commercial building is the Strathcona Hotel, built in 1891. Wooden buildings were built prior to 1902 when the Town of Strathcona passed a bylaw requiring the building of new buildings to be brick, hoping to prevent fires. Much of the current brick stock was erected during the 1910-1912 traveling boom that brought thousands of settlers west. Strathcona still can show off one of very few areas left in Canada with a "first generation" building stock. In 2005, Edmonton City Council sent a letter to the Province of Alberta requesting heritage status for the area.

In the 1990s, Strathcona was home to many independent coffee shops speckling Whyte Avenue. In the ten year period stretching over 1995 to 2005 these coffee shops slowly shut down. In their place now are Starbucks, Timothy's and The Second Cup at the main intersection of 104th Street and Whyte Avenue. The rest of the locations have become restaurants and "hang out" hot spots. The clubs include places for all types of people, motorcyclists, and musicians, including new and different talents. The late night weekend club scene becomes alive with regular visitors as well as unique and talented people. This area is noted for all of the famous activity attracting the media and tourists looking to find a place to show off their own special talent.
Strathcona offers a wide variety of style and class due to the many independent, locally owned stores running up and down Whyte Avenue. Clothing sales have been on the rise concentrating in the style area of "hippie" "rave" and even "goth". Some of the local clothing shops include, Avenue Clothing Co., Foosh, Colourblind, Divine, Top Gear Scooters, Queue, Lemon wink Clothing, Plush, Sophia's and American Apparel highlighting the avenue.
Strathcona holds the throne when it comes to the life of the party for Edmonton. Not only do they have thriving nights and brilliant fashion gurus, they also have the bulk of the restaurants all within a four and a half mile stretch. Dotting the streets with almost 100 dives to stop and eat, Strathcona can savor the flavor for anyone's taste buds. It does not even stop there; it goes on for more entertainment and pleasurable fun. Venues like theatres, playhouses and cinemas surround the streets.
Over time, the area has become the premier entertainment strip in Edmonton. With live music coming from every direction, Strathcona brings life after dark. Pubs, restaurants, coffee shops and small treasure box stores attract many different styles and ages.
Strathcona celebrates all year long. Every month brings a new theme and a new party or celebration. For example, January brings Ice on Whyte, a sculpting competition and outdoor playground; June features Improvaganza, an invitational international improv festival, hosted by Rapid Fire Theatre. July is the busiest of all, starting with the Silly Sumer Parade on July 1.
It is of no doubt that Strathcona provides history as well as modern day entertainment and fun.
