The neighborhood is surrounded by a mixture of residential neighborhoods and light industrial areas. The residential neighborhoods are High Park to the east, Canora to the south east, and Britannia Youngstown to the south. Industrial subdivisions are Youngstown Industrial to the west, West Sheffield Industrial to the west and North West, Sheffield Industrial to the north, and High Park Industrial to the north east.
The neighborhood could be likened to a small village prior to 1946 when there was a boom in construction in the post-World War II years between 1946 and 1960. Residential construction waned steadily after that with a minimal amount being constructed in the 1970s. Mayfield’s dwellings are mainly single- detached houses (family dwellings). However, there are a few row houses, duplexes and low rise apartment buildings.
Most of these residences are rented. Mayfield has only two schools; the Edmonton Public School System operates the Mayfield Elementary School, while the Edmonton Catholic School System operates Our Lady Of Peace Catholic Elementary School. Children can also attend schools in the neighboring communities of High Park, Canora, and Britannia Youngstown. These are the Youngstown Elementary School, St. Luke Catholic School and Britannia Junior High School in Britannia, Brightview Elementary School and Holy Cross Elementary Junior High School in Canora and High Park Elementary School in High Park.
There are a number of parks in the neighborhood: Mayfield Park, Otto Leslie Park, Patrick J. Ryan Park, and Phoebe Mccullough Park which offer a wonderful area for the family to spend some quality time together. In the South western corner of Britannia is the Mayfield Common shopping centre which should satisfy every shoppers needs.
