Britannia Youngstown was originally a part of Jasper Place, which was an independent town in the 1960s. Jasper Place was the largest town in Canada at the time, but financial problems meant that amalgamation with Edmonton was the only option. The townspeople very reluctantly voted for the merger after a lot of discussion and dispute. Britannia Youngstown is the area of Edmonton which is bounded by Mayfield Road on the West, and 156 Street on the east. The north and south are demarcated by 107 Avenue and Stony Plain Road.

Just the name ‘Stony Plain Road’ is very reminiscent of what this early settlement must have been like with the early settlers trying to eke out a living in the beginning of the settlement. Now of course, this is a major arterial road of this Edmonton area and those early settlers’ eyes would not have believed the number of big stores and hotels and restaurants which thrive in this area. These cater to locals, commuters and travelers alike.
Britannia Youngstown has three schools: Britannia Junior High and Youngstown Elementary are run by the Edmonton public school system. This is the largest school district in Edmonton and there are 195 schools in this district in total. St. Luke Catholic School is run by Edmonton Catholic School system. This is slightly smaller and is in charge of 84 schools. The Catholic school system started in 1888 when three nuns started teaching a mere 23 students in Edmonton. Schooling started at age seven and finished with the students reached 12 years of age. Now, this system has grown and provides schooling to approximately 32,000 pupils altogether.
Most people shop at the Mayfield Common Shopping Centre which is in the south west corner of the neighbourhood. It is found near the enormous Edmonton Mall and houses several useful shops. There is a Walmart and Office Depot as well as other popular stores here such as Winners, Sport Check and Save-on-Foods. It is famous for being part of the shopping capital of Canada. Britannia Youngstown comprises a mixture of residential and light industrial sectors.
The residential part is mainly Mayfield in the north, High Park in the north east, Canora in the east side, and West Jasper Place and Glenwood in the south. The industrial parts of the town are Youngstown industrial to the west and north west, Stone Industrial in the west and Place LaRue in the south west.
