Boyle Street is also known as the East Side of the Downtown area of Edmonton, Alberta. The easiest way to find this vibrant area is to directly go east of the downtown core. One can also take the "main avenue," Jasper Avenue east, and you will come to Boyle Street. Besides, the location to the city's core Boyle Street has a long history.
Boyle Street is one of he oldest parts of the city and is named after a lawyer, John Robert Boyle. This street was the home to the first, "downtown" area. It switched hands to the Hudson Bay Company who furthered its development. Because of this transaction the Boyle Street area has a new feel, while continuing to keep some of its historic charm. Some of its historic charm dates back to the early nineteen hundreds.

However, since the Boyle Street area ranges from complete development to underdevelopment areas the city of Edmonton has called for a plan of action. This plan has be given the name the, Downtown East Project.
The Downtown East project divided the area into four quarters. The first quarter is called the Heritage quarter, since most of the historic feel and buildings are gathered there. Directly north of the historic area is the Civic Quarter: properly named since the Provincial Law Courts of Alberta are located there. The other tow quarters are named McCauley Quarter and the Five Corners Quarter. These two quarters are for the residents of the Boyle Street area. The population varies amount these last tow quarters from dense to a relax feel.
The Boyle Street area is truly a mixture of environments. It of course has the uniqueness of history and the newly developed residential parts. There is a lot of progress still being made, since there is still a decent amount of underdeveloped areas of Boyle Street. However, it is a great area right east of the downtown core where one can shop, work, and take in many types of entertainment. One can live in the historical quarter and have all the services of a modern and growing city.
The Downtown East Project is the biggest revamping of the area taking place. This makes it a unique area of the downtown area because there is a lot of potential. If one has the mindset to enjoy a lively and growing area of the city, the Boyle Street area might be for you.
